Description
Since being sworn in three months ago, the government of Jordanian Prime Minister Samir Rifai has been systematically criticized for the poor performance of its members who face huge economic, social and political challenges. Although no "big expectations" were placed on the new 29-member government which inherited scores of challenges from the previous administration of Nader Dahabi, notably rocketing overall public debt, analysts agree that the weakness of many of its members is adversely affecting overall performance, Beirut's daily AN NAHAR correspondent in Amman, Omar Assaf, reported (March 3). Rifai, a prominent businessman and close confident of King Abdullah, has appointed several "heavyweights" and reliable experts as part of his team to carry out far-reaching political and economic reforms which his predecessor failed to implement during his two-year tenure. "But the performance of those pillars is overshadowed and downsized by the big mistakes committed by the other members of the government," Assaf said. In addition to its weaknesses, the government is further discredited by internal divisions and disputes which prevent its proper functioning.
